
APFO Profile INSTITUTIONAL PROFILE OF AFRICA PEACE FORUM (APFO)Africa Peace Forum (APFO) is an independent, not-for-profit non-governmental organization registered in and based in Nairobi, Kenya. It facilitates research and advocacy on areas of peace and security at national, regional and international level. APFO was established in 1994 to contribute to the effective management of conflicts and the promotion of peace and security in the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region (this includes Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Uganda, Somalia, Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo). Africa Peace Forum currently serves as a National Research Institute (NRI) for the IGAD conflict Early Warning and Early Response Mechanism (CEWARN), as well as a resource partner for various national, regional, international organisations and governments in research, training, capacity building and advocacy in areas of Conflict early warning and response, small arms and light weapons control, conflict prevention, mitigation and resolution, good governance, democracy, development and security.

To contribute towards the prevention, resolution and effective management of conflicts by engaging state and non-state actors in exploring collaborative approaches to bring lasting peace in the Greater Horn of Africa and beyond.
APFO’S Objectives
APFO’s principal objectives in the Greater Horn of Africa are to:
- Support and promote the development of capacity for research and analysis in early warning and early response mechanisms, small arms and light weapons, conflict management and peace building.
- Encourage and engage state and non-state actors within the Great Lakes and the Horn of Africa region in exploring collaborative approaches to the pursuit of peace and security.
- Promote community-based peace initiatives and broaden the space for debate and analysis on peace and security issues at national, regional and international level.
- Encourage greater participation of women in conflict management and peace building efforts.
- Increase the capacity of APFO and its key partners in order to fulfil its mandate.
